Everything You Need To Know About Call of Duty: Vanguard

Vanguard!

Buckle up, because the vanguard have arrived. Call of Duty: Warzone’s latest in-game event was a big one, dropping details on the next Call of Duty game, its setting, and how it will all tie together with Warzone’s world.

Here's everything we learned from the Battle of Verdansk event, and when Call of Duty: Vanguard will be released.

The Battle of Verdansk Event

The Battle of Verdansk event centered on destroying an armored train as it snaked its way around the map. All squads worked together to destroy the train's seven traincarts, each of which was equipped with two turrets. As the train became more damaged, the turrets began shooting explosive rounds. The battle culminated with the destruction of the locomotive's main engine, at which point the real meat of the event began.

A cutscene played, showing countless B32 bombers flying overhead. Players then had but moments to rush to an evacuation zone before being told by their handler that they couldn't be extracted. Players were then bombarded, and the camera turned to look towards the sky filled with bombers. At this point, the Call of Duty Vanguard reveal trailer played.

Vanguard Trailer

Rumors and speculation have long held that the next Call of Duty game would return to World War 2, and it looks like they were right. This entry is being developed by Sledgehammer games and will take place across all four of the main battlezones from the era, including North Africa, the Eastern Front, the Western Front, and the Pacific Theatre. The story is said to take place across some of the most historic battles of WW2.

The story will see players take control of four unique, multinational characters as they fight through their respective battlezones and become the blueprints for the later games' operatives. The new characters include:

  • Sergeant Arthur Kingsley from Britain
  • Lieutenant Polina Petrova from Russia
  • Captain Wade Jackson from the U.S.
  • Second Lieutenant Lucas Riggs From Australia

16 core multiplayer maps as well as four Champion Hill maps have currently been confirmed for the game on release day. Champion Hill, if you’re wondering, is slated to be the newest game mode introduced with Vanguard. It was also confirmed that a new gunsmith system will be present in the game as well. Players can expect a calendar's worth of new maps, seasonal events, community celebrations, and special drops in post-launch updates.

Zombies

Not only has Zombies been confirmed for Vanguard, it was revealed that Treyarch is working with Sledgehammer on the mode. Right now, there's little other information on what this crossover will look like, but Vanguard's Zombies story is said to be a precursor to Cold War's. More news about Zombies is set to come out around Halloween.

Warzone Changes

Warzone isn't being left out of the picture when Vanguard releases. The battle royale will finally get a new map around the time the game releases later this year. No real information about what this map will look like has been unveiled, but cross progression has been confirmed.

Vanguard will be folded into the cross progression system that includes Warzone, Cold War, and Modern Warfare currently. Battlepasses and ranks will transfer seemlessly between the games, as well as some purchasable items.

A new anti-cheat system is also being developed for Warzone on PC. Developed by Raven Software, it will be released at the same time as Warzone's new map.
